Motherhood’s early days are bewildering, and after making sure my family's needs were met, gaming was my first choice. But it didn’t play out the way I wanted. Not at first.
Thank you so much for this! My wife and I are two months away from our due date and we've been reading books like mad to prepare. It's interesting to see how much books talk about hobbies and interests in generalities, but rarely specific.
I showed my wife this article and she very much feels seen, even moreso than the books we're reading.
We got our friends a new game for their switch as a baby gift. 😅 it got some use initially and then again when naps were a thing. Thank you for sharing your experience so openly. 💚
I've got an almost 3-year-old now, but I remember those early weeks and months well. I relied on mobile games a ton, especially the Mitsuhiro Okada's series of Minute games (MinuteRogue, MinuteKnights, etc.), which kept me sane through the sleep regressions and the colic.
Thanks for sharing your story — I hope you continue to make time for gaming, and for losing yourself in other worlds.
Thanks for sharing! In the midst of raising our second at the moment - 2 months old. Mobile gaming is what I’ve switched to, to get me through those longer nights.
I regret not using my Switch more in those early days! I thought it was too bulky, boy was I wrong. What are your go-to games in the middle of the night?
We’ve got a switch as well - I’ll have to give that a go! Right now I switch between Archero 2 and Pokémon TCG Pocket. Neither require too much brain power and are a nice respite from middle-of-the-night rocking
Thank you so much James! And congratulations! I hope gaming will brighten the days ahead—they're magical but you both will need a break, especially your wife 💛

Ooooh which game did you get them?
Thank you 💛
It was super Mario borders Wonder 😅
A beautiful retrospective.
My son was 6 months old when 'The Event' hit the world; I actually traded a Pack & Play for a PS4 to get back into gaming!
Flash forward 5 years and we've got a PS5, a Steam Deck and way too many controllers for a household of 3!
