Merry Christmas to you and yours! Sorry, gift giving comes early in Germany and so are my Christmas wishes 😅
I have two distinct Christmas memories related to games:
1: I remember my father and uncle being holed up in my father's office all afternoon one Christmas, trying to install "The Lion King" on my dad's C64. For some reason (maybe the three floppy disks the game on didn't help speed things up...) it took them all afternoon. The reveal was epic, they were so proud. 😄 I didn't even play the game that often, but them desperately trying to make it work for me is something I'll always remember.
2: My father is a pastor so the year they gifted me the Diablo (scandalous!!!) 2 expansion "Lord of Destruction" (!!!!!) for Christmas (!!!!!!!) we were joking that I could never tell anyone. Because if people knew the pastor's son was playing a game named after and featuring the freakin devil and his unholy brothers, well, it wouldn't look so good. Luckily they were way to cool about this game and many others to come, but I still chuckle at the way my father was basically planning for the scandal to unfold with this particular gift and having a blast doin it.
Great praise to Crossplay for bringing Crossy Road Castle into my life. It's the perfect game when there's one or more people capable of fancy platforming and one or more people who would also like to play without getting left behind. We successfully had one 7yo and two 5yo play together at our holiday party, making mostly happy sounds throughout.
I find Mario Kart an exhausting bore, it takes forever and it's still likely one of the kids will get upset. I've been on the lookout for humane cooperative games like Crossy Road Castle, and hope there's even more like that to be found.
Also I didn't know there was a holiday Astro Bot level???!!
I added Lego Horizon Adventures in queue at our library a while ago, and our turn came available just at the start of my kids’ school break. They (9 and 6) are in love with it, eclipsing even their love for Astrobot. I attribute that to it being co-op, with generous difficulty options. They love jumping off cliffs repeatedly, smacking each other with Lego pieces, dressing up in goofy outfits, and have been able to make significant progress on their own. It’s the first time the 6yo has been capable enough to keep up. I bet this will be a core holiday memory for them!
For my part, I’m digging in to Indiana Jones as well, and am really loving it. A nice surprise for me! Having a consecutive set of days where I can immerse myself into a game reminds me of my pre-parent holidays.
Our daughter asked for the a Switch for Christmas, so that is her "big" present. We got her Princess Peach Showdown to go with it and she can "borrow" games from her big brother like New Pokémon Snap. She turns 6 in April, so we'll see how she does with playing the games herself. We got our son a Switch when he was the same age and gave him Animal Crossing, which he enjoyed but didn't love the way I thought he would.
Our son is getting Echoes of Wisdom and the Splatoon 2 DLC. He keeps asking for Robux and we still haven't decided if that's happening. At least we don't have to go anywhere to buy that if we decide to do it 😅
Yup! Got No Man’s Sky exhibitions to get through. The most recent one finished today and the next one starts Xmas day. And I’ve got to get through it before I leave for my holiday. Else I’m working through my third replay of cyberpunk and dabbling in some vampire survivors. All on my steam deck.
One particularly memorable Christmas was 2001. My parents were pretty strict about ESRB ratings, but had given approval for my older brother to get Metal Gear Solid 2 for me as a present (I was 15). But upon unwrapping this DVD shaped gift, I was surprised to find it was not MGS2, but Grand Theft Auto 3. This was also a surprise to my mom! I will never forget the look on her face. My brother's explanation was that MGS2 was sold out, and if that's what I really wanted I could exchange it after the holiday. This is definitely some kind of forked parallel universe moment, as I ended up trying GTA3 since review scores were so good, even though I hadn't really been interested, and absolutely fell in love. And I never ended up circling back and playing MGS2, despite loving MGS1 and playing the demo that came with Devil May Cry a ton.
Gaming is big in our household. We bought a secondhand PSVR for the kids this year so they can play Astrobot Rescue Mission. I don't know how it's going to play out. Hopefully not too much trouble taking turns or motion sickness. They also all got a Switch game (Mario 3d world, Pikmin 4, and The Patrick Star Game) so they'll have something else to do when breaks are needed.
Anytime I have more than one or two days off from work I get delusions of grandeur of how I'll spend gaming time. I want to play Jedi Survivor and dig back into Lego Fortnite (Odyssey) since they've made a lot of major changes since I last played in April. I've also spent some time with Nine Sols since it hit game pass and want to keep going in that. I bought Prince of Persia for myself when it dropped to $15 last month (I'm the problem!) but honestly don't see myself actually installing and playing it anytime soon. I like to dip my toe back into the Alaskan wildlands of Snowrunner this time of year, too. My brother will be visiting and we always get a couple rounds of Street Fighter in.
