Oooh that's fantastic! Sounds like a great game I could play with my husband—we don't frequently intersect in our gaming preferences, and It Takes Two was a ton of fun for us.

Also, absolutely yes to more accessibility. I adore games that allow the player to dial down as much as they need. It only helps bring more players to the table.

I’ve been playing this with my 8-year-old daughter too and we’re loving it. Her 5-yo sister enjoys watching, so it’s been our best family game experience to date. She got very into the cyber ninja section and was annoyed anytime the game took us out of it. We spent so much time in the little rooftop pool segment that I started to worry we would never advance the game from there.

My almost-8yo and I have been having an amazing time. So far the hardest sequences for her have been anything with flight controls. Piloting the car in the sci-fi stage, where you need to thread the needle between closing doors. A later side story involving flying.

There's probably an accessibility option to de-invert flying controls, but I think it's valuable for her to learn that sometimes things are just flipped in video games, for reasons.

One thing I did not hesitate to turn on was the option that turns button mashing sequences into button holding sequences. There's a crank or something early on that both players have to mash to activate, it didn't come easy so I flipped the option on and didn't look back. I have bad enough RSI that mashing starts hurting after a time anyway. Speeds up the revival sequences nicely too.

Great write up, thanks for sharing. I'd like to play this with my 8-year-old, but I'm a bit worried about the T rating. Most of the stuff I've seen in the trailers makes it seem like a "strong E" vs. a T, but have you encountered anything more intense yet?

I'm about halfway through the game:

The characters use a lot of salty language like "shit" and "douchebag"

There's guns, lots of guns

One enemy takes a sword through the (helmeted) head, big time

It's not a Disney movie, but the story is overall pretty wholesome: the bad man's company is doing a bad thing and needs to be stopped.

I'm playing with my almost-8 year old, with my 5yo watching the whole way through. Hopefully I'm not scarring anyone for life!

Really useful to read this. My son has loved it takes two where they are currently serving ads for split fiction. But I've been put off by the PEGI 16 rating. From what you're saying, the violence isn't that violent and perhaps the rating is a tad high

Thank you so much for this post, which I found from Google. I have seen this is rated 16 (vs ITT’s 13 rating), and I have heard there is a “children’s party scene” which is much worse than ITTs elephant scene. Have you come across this yet? I want to play this game with my 5 & 10yo but I don’t want to traumatise them… how bad is it?? I’m fine with swearing, but I don’t want to emotionally damage the kids! Thanks again…

The missus probably won't be able to play this with me because she just can't get the hang of manipulating 3D cameras. My 10 year old can, but the wife and I have been trying to limit her exposure to media with combat/death/guns for various reasons. The gunship in the dash video seems about the limit of what we want our daughter to see right now. Does it get more gnarly from there violence/combat-wise or is that about where it hovers?

Not in my experience, but I've only played a few hours of the game, so I cannot say with 100% certainty. Just a little violence + a few swears is what I've seen.

Thanks for your impressions! Same as the above gents It Takes Two has been gateway to excitement for this upcoming game. My daughter and I have played through ITT twice, but we skip the story at her request, which is her typical MO with game stories in general, so I'm hoping this new game will be a win on both gameplay and story.

Oh, that's really funny. Does she bounce off storytelling in other mediums, too? Or just focused on the gameplay?

It is more prominent in games for sure, I think mainly due to the interactive nature of them she has less tolerance for cutscenes, and gets frustrated quickly if you can't skip. Her favorite solo game is Bugsnax but you wouldn't know if you heard her complaining when she gets forced into some storytelling scenarios even if you do have some ability to move around during parts. Even skipping or speeding through forced story bits in that game she was sobbing when any of them died at the end, so she gets plenty attached without cutscenes etc. 😁

My wife and I got back into It Takes Two recently on Valentine's Day (plans to play something else went sideways), so I think we're committed to finishing that before picking this up. It looks so good and we're excited to get to it.
