I'm also using games to understand my daughter :) she's 11 now. All her friends were playing Roblox, Fortnite and Animal Crossing, so she was always asking if we could have a game console. I said yes, but the condition was we would have to discuss and watch together the game before buying/installing. The result is very satisfying. She learned to appreciate the details of the game and what makes her like a game, instead of it just being a "because everyone plays".
She loves playing games with me, but we also had our discussions because of this. One game that I really recommend as a must try is "It takes two". The studio behind that game recently did another one "Split fiction" that seems to be as good, but haven't played yet.
