My family will likely be buying 2. One for me and one for my wife, who will boot up dreamlight valley, play it for 5 minutes before falling asleep mining for ore.
Similar to other readers my kids (3 of them) mostly use our 2 shared Switches for Minecraft at this point but they do also loooove 3D Marios and the Kirby games. If a new one of those is announced I would probably just get one Switch 2 instead of making the switch to 2 Switch 2s right away. And hope that the Switch 1 controllers are compatible.
We have one Switch for the whole house, connected 99% of the time to the living room TV, primarily for all playing together. As soon as it’s released we’ll be upgrading that to a Switch 2 for the whole house. A time-honored central role for every Nintendo console since I was a kid.
This has always been my setup as well. I still remember carefully scheduled time swapping between siblings for Ocarina of Time time when we weren't playing a multi-player game.
I feel like you're missing part of the sibling experience if you don't at some point almost get into a fistfight over whether the other has used all their time or have the opportunity to create a whole sibling barter system over game time 😂
On of my distinct memories of constantly getting yelled at by a friend's father because I would get upset while losing at Street Fighter II and try to throw the controller.
For me it was probably the Lion King Sega Genesis game or N64 Mario Kart with the siblings/cousins.
Both of which are interesting because my son is now learning to not rage quit and throw controllers while playing a remake of another Sega platformer (Sonic) and the Switch version of Mario Kart.
Switch 2 will be my secret switch. I will liberate my animal crossing island from it by moving it to switch 2 then my daughter can truly have my acnh special edition switch. She doesn’t even know 2 is coming and we still have so many games on switch she can enjoy.
As a parent, I totally relate! The Switch has been a huge hit in our home too, and managing screen time between siblings is always a challenge. When we first got one, my oldest was thrilled, but of course, the younger one wanted their turn too. Eventually, it felt like the only solution was getting another!
With the Switch 2 coming, I can already see history repeating itself. If there’s a new Mario Kart or any big multiplayer game, there’s no way my kids won’t want to play—probably each on their own device! It’s funny how gaming starts as a shared experience but often turns into making sure everyone gets their own space to play.
On the bright side, at least there are plenty of fun games to keep them entertained! My kids have been really into creative games lately, especially Toca Boca. If anyone else’s kids love those kinds of games, they might enjoy some cool modded versions here: https://tocasbocasapk.com/. Let’s see how long we can hold off on getting a second Switch 2!
My ignorance! I'd never even considered more than one per household. Till I read this. No wonder it sells. Geez. Some households have like four Switch consoles!
My genuine thought here for a launch window was a June/July launch for the die hard Nintendo fans, followed by a restock period in time for Christmas presents.
That's all... unconfirmed.
But earlier articles suggested Nintendo was concerned about supply at launch -- kinda killed the PS5 a bit -- so launching ahead of Christmas, where its two markets will fight for access to the same product, may make sense?
We're always several years behind on the console purchasing front, so I'm guessing we will be waiting to purchase until there's a good 2025 or 2026 Black Friday sale.
In the meantime, we still have a ton of regular switch games to introduce our son to as he gets older and his reading skills (and patience) improve. So I don't currently feel rushed to add a new console.
Things that could change this? An especially impressive looking game release in one of the properties we love (coughZeldacough).
The Switch 2 is for daddy lol. My daughter already has a Switch Lite and mostly uses it for Minecraft, so no need to upgrade hers at this point (though I may gift her my Switch OLED so she can play it docked).
We were gaming on my PS3, for which I had very few child appropriate games, until Christmas 2021 when I bought a Switch for the household. One of the main reasons being the PS5 was both abominably expensive and still very difficult to get hold of at the time. So I'm not that likely to rush out and get a new console as soon as it is available, although my nearly 9 year old will probably have something to say about it. At the moment we mainly play with the Switch docked to the TV, likely my kid will want to do more things on his own as he gets older. Right now he's on a Fortnite ban due to excessive grumpiness about not winning so more solo play is really not for the best in the near future!
My original concerns about allowing Fortnite, (too violent, in-game purchasing) which I allayed by doing some research, pale into comparison with good old shouting and screaming about not winning. Grumpiness about losing both video games and board games, card games etc is a big issue in the household anyway (I think it's genetic 😅). Fortnite has definitely brought out the worst of it but is hopefully also a motivation to work on anger issues.

We will definitely buy one switch 2 for the family and remember the importance of sharing and taking turns.

Same, and my two mostly did the same with TotK.

Day one purchase. But it’s for me as much as for them!

I think starting with one as a family device and seeing how it slots in, especially without knowing the launch games yet, makes sense.

But who knows!
My guess is many families hold strong at one at launch, and then...it gets complicated at Christmas!

Nice! I like that plan.

Oh no! My daughter has asked about Fortnite but it hasn't broken through yet.
